CD "Delicious surprise" on Curb Records

French version of the JoDee Messina interview - JoDee Messina at CMA Music Fest 2009

This exclusivity was granted to Jean Agostini for HighwayFM.com. The meeting took place in the room of the board of directors of the management of JoDee Messina, just a step from her label, Curb records. An ideal atmosphere for the interview, very quiet, and a very warm circle of acquaintances. JoDee Messina evokes its musical influences, from Reba McEntire to Journey, its admiration for an artist rock blues, the choice of the subjects of its songs, and the plans in view of her concert at Country Rendez-Vous Festival which constitutes a total exclusivity for France because it is its first show in the country. JoDee also speaks to us about what she appreciates in the life. You will discover a woman of temperament, it is certain, who has a lot of humor and who likes the simple things of the daily life.

HighwayFM.com: You are a real performer on stage. So, what did you listen to when you grew up?

JoDee Messina: When I was growin' up, I listened to Reba McEntire, the Judds, who was really big when I was a kid, Alabama, Hank Williams Jr, a couple of mix you know, wasn't my straight traditional sound in country music. Also progressive rock.

HighwayFM.com: Which bands do you enjoy in progressive rock?

JoDee Messina: oh my gosh, I love everything. If someone ask me who would you like to do something with, a duet or do a song, probably Bonnie Raitt. Because I think she is totally laid back cool, she is all about the music. It's not about a super glam show, she is just here to create music.

HighwayFM.com: I appreciate your music because you are also open-minded. A few years back, you played at the stadium in Nashville and you covered "Don't stop believin'" and that was magic!!

JoDee Messina: (laughs of happyness listenin' that!!!) oh yes, I love this kind of stuff, and that's why we started to do that because I am such a fan of Journey. It's 80's rock, I don't love all 80's rock but this band is great. Music is so inspiring.

HighwayFM.com: I think you are much more open-minded than other artists.

JoDee Messina: Right!!

HighwayFM.com: The hazard of life is curious because after CMA Fest, I return to Paris to see Journey in concert on june 16.

JoDee Messina: Waahh! they played in Paris, good for you.

HighwayFM.com: Will you have a full band for the French concert?

JoDee Messina: Yes, we will have a full band. I think some of the guys will be with their wives, to give them the chance to see the area and enjoy the visit.

HighwayFM.com: How many days do you stay in France?

JoDee Messina: Four days.

HighwayFM.com: There are very good restaurants, very quiet and with good wine in the region and in Paris.

JoDee Messina: I was goin' to say how is the wine selection?? It's gonna be great in a old country. I love red wine and my husband enjoys Burgundy and Côte du Rhône, and also l'Hermitage.

HighwayFM.com: What would you love to say to the french and european crowd in regards of your French appearance?

JoDee Messina: I would love to say we really lookin' for to come in over. We really come in over to see the people and hope they enjoy the music. And we bring the best we got.

HighwayFM.com: How many times will take the show?

JoDee Messina: I don't know. Usually, we do 75 minutes, it's about 15 songs. An hour is 12 songs, and 45 minutes it's 8 songs, but it might be different over there, because I usually talk a lot between songs, I need to joke a lot around the audience. I figure out if how many peoples understands me, and if not many peoples understand me, ...... (JoDee does a sign a silence with her mouth!! laughs!!)... Do the music, you know.

HighwayFM.com: You can say some French words on stage.

JoDee Messina: I don't try!! I look at up first.

HighwayFM.com: With a little bit of humour and energy, like M'n'M's!!!

JoDee Messina: Yes!!! exactly!! When I was little, my sister spoke French, and apparently I was flew in French, I was in school but I don't remember any of that. I remember my older sisters and brothers grave around my cousins and put me in the corner to say a few words!! And they made me cry. I remember the intergonizing words!!

HighwayFM.com: Which instruments will be on stage?

JoDee Messina: I am not sure how much equipments we're gonna be able to bring over there but we usually play guitars, piano and drums, this kind of stuff, but we might be limited and dicted by what we can take over there.

HighwayFM.com: Many fans request how the artists take a break on the road, how do they relax?

JoDee Messina: Red wine!! It's pretty relaxing. We set up on the front lunge, and everybody talks to each other, in the bed to read a book, it's really uneventfull.

HighwayFM.com: No multimedia games, no DVDs?

JoDee Messina: We have satellite TV. So, we pick movie.

HighwayFM.com: And what kind of movie do you prefer? Science-fiction, historical?

JoDee Messina: Oh, I like the girls movies, romantic movies, that kind of stuff, Ocean 11, 12 & 13, but mostly romantic comedies.

HighwayFM.com: Romeo & Juliet? (a small roguish provocation!!)

JoDee Messina: More you've got males!! (laughs!!!)

HighwayFM.com: I prefer that. In fact, it is not a european tour. It's only a concert for France.

JoDee Messina: Yes, we are not touring Europe.

HighwayFM.com: Did you play overseas, in China, Japan, Australia?

JoDee Messina: Yes, we have played in Japan, Australia, and London, Ireland, Scotland. We made once this tour seven years ago.

HighwayFM.com: And who is the artist you wish to work with?

JoDee Messina: Definitely Bonnie Raitt. We cover that. (laughs!!)

HighwayFM.com: Bonnie Raitt is more blues than country, and she's great.

JoDee Messina: Yes, she is great.

HighwayFM.com: I know you are also a fan of Reba McEntire, who is more R'n'B, blues and soul.

JoDee Messina: Yes, she's got you know different faces through her career. She was traditional country, then a kind of progressive country, then big band, and dance stuff, and I love to watch that progression.

HighwayFM.com: Did you play on stage with Bonnie Raitt?

JoDee Messina: No, and I have never met her. But I met Reba obviously because she is right here in town.

HighwayFM.com: How do you choose the themes of your songs? You have a strong mind, you write songs about positive feelings, and also songs where you treat problems of life, private subjects, relations with friends, friends lost.

JoDee Messina: I think, when I choose songs to record, I pretty much choose something that I can relate too, so all depends on what's happening in my life at that time, and we all have the happy days, the sad days, the days when you're angry, the days we need a little help, in love you know, wish you were in love, or whatever, so that's how I pick the songs I records. You go through, because a lot of different topics, life is that way.

HighwayFM.com: Are there fans who request to you some advices for their lives?

JoDee Messina: (laughs) Oh no, no, I would never.., I try to figure out myself. I am not an expert in any of that stuff. I'm not giving any advice.

HighwayFM.com: Thank you JoDee for your time, and see you at Country Rendez-Vous Festival.

JoDee Messina: Thanks to you.
